About Jef Fisk

With the recent release of his new collections, HeartArt (2021) and Sandwich (2020), Jef Fisk returned to the world of regular performance to share his unique blend of humor and sentiment, employing a mixture of original material, “off the beaten path” songs and classic popular acoustic music to engage and charm audiences with his brand of thoughtful fun.

As a refugee from the rock-band-mania of the late 1960s, Jef began a career as an acoustic performer / songwriter in the early 70s, delighting audiences with song and commentary beginning in the Detroit area and eventually ranging from Chicago to Boston and from Saratoga Springs, NY to Cincinnati. He performed at many Detroit area venues including college concerts in Southeastern Michigan and, most notably, The Raven Gallery, which Jef also managed from 1977-79. Outside of Michigan, Jef made performance appearances in Boston (Sword and the Stone), Saratoga Springs (Cafe Lena) and other venues in Cincinnati and the North East quarter of the US, publishing two albums along the way, It's All Rootbeer (1974) and For Sam (1977). These were recently re-released on CD for Asian distribution by Big Pink Music. Jef also produced mid-70s albums for Chuck Mitchell (Combinations) and Michael Smith (Zen).

Since then, he has published several recorded collections including his Silverwear CD, Jus' Broadway Folk with a group he assembled and named Cavorting Porpoises and, in 2015, Antecedents. In the 1990s, while performing short concerts in local elementary and middle schools, Jef released a series of compilations of music for children.

On the performance front, since the early 1980s, he’s limited himself to small concerts in the Detroit area to benefit local charities. He also performed as an actor in local theaters as Mark Twain, Mr. Maraczek in She Loves Me, Jim in Pump Boys and Dinettes, Hucklebee in The Fantasticks, Sir Bedevere in Spamalot and a variety of "experimental theater" productions, as well as writing a few plays and co-hosting a local television show.

As a playwright, Jef has authored several plays, most recently, Mumbet, a drama based on a true 18th century story about the dawn of the abolitionist movement. The play was recently workshopped with a theater group in Southeastern Michigan.
